The Puritans dominated my mental picture of those who colonized America. In researching the story, I discovered three waves of immigration populated the colonies. English gentry and their servants filled one wave. Known as Cavaliers, they were Royalists who had lost to Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. They chose to settle in the new world primarily in Virginia and the Carolinas. They provided the foundation that grew into the Southern culture of the the early United States.
