Offering meditation using Proverbs 3:9-10

Isn’t the price of gasoline outrageous? It seems like everything is getting more expensive. Gasoline, natural gas, electricity, milk, eggs, bacon and other food. I hear new cars and used cars are through the roof. And the housing market has been crazy. I’m sure no one here loves inflation. We’d like it to stop, wouldn’t we? But there is little we can do but cut back on our spending. Have you stopped buying things you used to enjoy?

Inflationary times are also a time of temptation. First we worry about how to make ends meet. Then we’re tempted to cut back on our offerings to God, aren’t we? If you’re flirting with that temptation, listen to Proverbs 3:9, “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;” (NIV)

When the writer talks about the firstfruits, he is talking about priorities. Honoring God with our wealth should be the first thing we do, not the first thing we cut. God deserves all the honor we can give.

But there is another reason we must honor him even in the midst of inflation. I’ll reread the verse and include the following verse. “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

Honor God with your offering today and trust him to provide.
